42 B.C. – Marcus Junius Brutus, a leading conspirator in the assassination of Julius Caesar, dies by suicide after his defeat at the second battle of Philippi.

1941 – The animated film Dumbo is released, the fourth Disney animated feature. It was based on a children’s book about an elephant with big ears.

1983 – A suicide bomber drives a truck bomb into the U.S. Marine barracks in Beirut, killing 241 military personnel. That same morning, 58 French soldiers are killed in a similar attack.

2002 – About 50 Chechen rebels storm a Moscow theater, taking up to 700 people hostage. When Russian special forces invade, nearly all the guerrillas and 120 hostages are killed.
