1886 – The Statue of Liberty, a gift from the people of France, is dedicated in New York Harbor by Pres. Grover Cleveland.

1929 – Black Monday occurs on Wall Street as the stock market crashes with a 13% drop. The next day it drops another 12%.

1940 – Mussolini’s Italian army invades Greece in what will prove to be a disastrous military campaign.

1962 – Soviet Premier Nikita Khrushchev orders withdrawal of missiles from Cuba, ending the Cuban missile crisis.
