1863 – At the dedication of a military cemetery, four months after the single bloodiest battle of the Civil War, Pres. Abraham Lincoln delivers the Gettysburg Address, one of the most memorable speeches in American history. 

1942 – Soviet Red Army launches a counterattack against the Germans at Stalingrad, turning the tide of the war in the Soviet Union, forcing the Nazis to retreat.

1969 – Brazilian soccer legend Pele scores his 1,000th goal as a professional player against Vasco da Gama in Rio de Janeiro.  

2003 – An arrest warrant is issued for Michael Jackson on charges of sexual misconduct with a minor. He was acquitted two years later.
