1950 – Several feet of snow fall on a single day in the northeast and, combined with hurricane force winds, cause millions of dollars in damage and kill 160 people.

1960 – The Scottish Parliament meets to protect the alleged existence of the Loch Ness Monster. Some young English men were planning to drop homemade bombs into the water to force the creature to the surface.

1963 – Three days after his assassination in Dallas, Pres. John F. Kennedy is laid to rest with full military honors at Arlington National Cemetery.

1980 – Sugar Ray Leonard regains the welterweight championship when he defeats Roberto Duran in the eighth round.
