1787 – Delaware becomes the first state to ratify the Constitution, with all 30 delegates voting unanimously.
1805 – Lewis and Clark temporarily settle in Fort Clatsop in what is now Oregon. While the three-month stay was peaceful, it was not altogether pleasant, with a scarcity of goods and a plenitude of rain which fell all but 12 days of their stay.
1941 – Pearl Harbor is attacked, killing more than 2400 naval and military personnel.
1988 – Two earthquakes hit Armenia, measuring 6.9 and 5.8 in magnitude. The quakes killed 60,000 people and destroyed nearly half a milion buildings. They were felt as far away as Turkey and Iran.
