Utah State Board of Ed meeting Jan 6-7

The Utah State Board of Education (USBE) will hold its monthly meeting on Wednesday, January 6 beginning at 9 a.m. The meeting will be held online only. In accordance with directives about social distancing, members of the public will not be allowed in the Board’s offices.  Individuals desiring to give public comment must contact Board Secretary Lorraine Austin by 5 p.m., January 5 at [email protected]gov. There are a limited number of spaces available. Public comment will also be accepted through e-mail. The Board will also meet as the Governing Board of the Utah Schools for the Deaf and the Blind on January 6 from 10:15 to 10:55 a.m. Board committees will meet sequentially on Thursday, January 7 beginning at 8 a.m. These meetings will only be online. Those who wish to comment on committee agenda items should e-mail the secretary of the committee they wish to address before the meeting. Public comment will be at the discretion of committee chairs. Law and Licensing Committee will meet beginning at 8 a.m., Standards and Assessment Committee beginning at 11:30 a.m., and Finance Committee beginning at 3 p.m.

Highlights of this month’s Board meeting include:

• Swearing-in ceremony for seven new Board Members and two reelected Board Members.
• Continued work on both funding and statutory requests ahead of the 2021 general session of the Utah Legislature later this month.
• Direction on potential amendments to Administrative Rule R277-726 Statewide Online Education Program following a December public hearing.
• Potential approval of a Resolution Denouncing Racism and Embracing Equity in Utah Schools.
