  • 1940 – Nancy Pelosi is born.
  • 1953 – Dr. Jonas Salk announces the polio vaccine. The previous year, there were 58,000 new cases in the US alone. Mass vaccinations have nearly eradicated the disease.
  • 1830 – The Book of Mormon was first offered for sale in E. B. Grandin’s bookstore in Palmyra, New York.
