Race Rating Change: Utah Attorney General

A big shift in our rating for the Utah Attorney General contest in the wake of a poll showing incumbent Sean Reyes with a big lead over Democrat Charles Stormont.

We originally had this race rated as "lean Republican" because of the scandal that forced former Attorney General John Swallow from office in November of last year. That had the potential to impact the electoral fortunes of Republican Reyes simply because he belonged to the same party as Swallow.

That does not seem to be the case as a UtahPolicy.com poll shows Reyes with a 35-point lead over Stormont.

Because of that, we now see victory for Reyes as a virtual certainty.

Our rating scale:

  • "Safe" seats mean there is no challenger from the opposing party.
  • "Solid" means the seat is likely to remain in that party's control.
  • "Lean" means the party should keep control of the seat, but it's in some doubt because of a retirement or strong challenger.
  • "Toss-up" means control of the seat is in doubt.

Previous rating: Lean Republican

New rating: Safe Republican
