- 1824 – The House of Representatives convened to decide the presidential election because no candidate had received a majority in the Electoral College. John Quincy Adams was eventually chosen the winner over Andrew Jackson and Henry Clay.
- 1891 – The game of basketball was invented when James Naismith put peach baskets at the opposite ends of a gym and gave students soccer balls to toss into them.
- 1917 – The Rev. Edward Flanagan founded Boys Town near Omaha.
- 1955 – Rosa Parks was arrested in Montgomery, Ala., for refusing to give up her seat to a white man on a city bus. Her arrest sparked a year-long boycott of the buses by blacks.
