Salt Lake City Announces 2015 Human Rights Award Recipients

The Salt Lake City Mayor’s Office of Diversity & Human Rights and Salt Lake City Human Rights Commission are pleased to announce the recipients of the 2015 Human Rights Awards.

Every year the HRC selects one individual and one organization to honor with the Human Rights Award. For 2015, the HRC will recognize Planned Parenthood Association of Utah and Dr. Mansoor Emam as the recipients of the 2015 Human Rights Awards. The HRC will also present a posthumous award to Frank Cordova in memory of his service and dedication to Salt Lake City residents.

This year’s award recipients have worked to improve the lives of people in our community. Planned Parenthood provides affordable, safe healthcare, sex education and information on health-related issues to men and women. The organization also works on state-level advocacy to ensure Utahans have access to low-cost health care and comprehensive education on important health and healthcare issues.

Dr. Mansoor Emam is the founder of two free medical clinics in Utah-the Hope Clinic in Midvale and the Meliheh Clinic in South Salt Lake. Both provide comprehensive medical care to low-income patients. Dr. Emam also supports and provides medical services to orphanages in Mexico.

Frank Cordova dedicated his life to the empowerment of the Latino community in Utah. He served as president of Centro Civico Mexicano, Executive Director of the Utah Coalition of La Raza and was a member of the Democratic Hispanic Caucus, Salt Lake County Council on Diversity Affairs and Salt Lake County Hispanic Task Force.

Mayor Ralph Becker and members of the ODHR and HRC invite residents to join in recognizing these outstanding award recipients. The public is invited to the Human Rights Awards event on December 10 during the Human Rights Day Celebration on the third floor of the Salt Lake City & County Building from 6 8:30 p.m. This annual fundraiser benefits the Human Rights Education Project. Tickets are $25 in advance and $30 at the door. Purchase tickets online at www.hrd2015.eventbrite.com.
