The Judicial Performance Evaluation Commission is seeking citizen volunteers to evaluate judges throughout the state.
Volunteers write reports that judges use for self-improvement purposes and that JPEC uses as one of several factors in deciding whether judges should be recommended for retention at election time.
“This is a unique opportunity for engaged citizens to participate in state government,” said Jennifer Yim, JPEC executive director. “We look for volunteers who value fairness in our state courts, and want to use observation and writing skills to help improve Utah’s courts.”
Volunteer observers will need basic computer skills, internet access and a commitment to work 5-10 hours per month.
“We train the volunteers on numerous items, including what to expect in court, what to look for, and how to submit reports,” said Yim. “Travel is reimbursed for training sessions. All court observers serve at the discretion of the Commission.”
