Sutherland Institute announced an upcoming event, “Innovations for Solving the Teacher Shortage.”
The panel, to be held Wednesday evening, Sept. 20, will be the first of four in a series hosted by Sutherland Institute addressing a range of education topics. All are welcome to attend. As seating is limited, preregistration is encouraged.
“Innovations for Solving the Teacher Shortage” will discuss the teacher shortage issue in Utah and explore how local leaders in Utah and other states are tackling the problem. Panelists (details below) will include local leaders who are implementing effective problem-solving innovations. These individuals are willing to share their stories and spread their successes in communities across Utah. Members of the public are encouraged to share this event on Facebook.
Future panels will include innovations for at-risk students; innovations for increasing education choice; and innovations for students with special needs. See the attached poster for details.

“The purpose of these panels is to share innovative ideas, open new networks, and find solutions,” Cooke said. “We want the Education Innovations series to create a hub of ideas that will help education leaders and parents address issues they’re facing with their respective districts, schools or students.
“When we talk about education reform, we must be willing to be creative. How do we handle unique local problems and unique needs of the students? Right now, with the teacher shortage being such a critical issue, Sutherland Institute will start by seeking to better equip our education leaders by giving them greater access to good ideas for both recruitment and retention.
“We are thrilled to present these panelists. They have on-the-ground experience and success stories, including both public and private school solutions … really an inspiring gamut of ideas. We believe these types of discussions are critical to solving the teacher shortage both in Utah and outside of our great state.”

- Keith Rittel, superintendent, Provo City School District. Rittel will highlight the Careers in Education high school program.
- Michelle McVicker, principal, Buena Vista Enhanced Option Elementary School. McVicker will be highlighting Opportunity Culture.
- Logan Hall, program facilitator of Peer Assistance Review (PAR), Salt Lake City School District. Hall will be highlighting PAR.
- Jason Hoopes, vice president of development, Teachers of Tomorrow. Hoopes will be highlighting the Teachers of Tomorrow program.
