Ridesharing has already changed the way Americans depend on owning a car and how we get around cities – but now it’s time to take an even bolder step toward creating a new future of mobility.
Today, Salt Lake City and Lyft are announcing Ditch Your Car, a program offering more than $417 of transportation credit to give up their cars for 30 days from October 8 to November 6 in favor of getting around town via Lyft rides, GREENbike and a Hive Pass for UTA bus, Trax and S-Line streetcar services.
“Salt Lake City is constantly looking for ways to give residents more affordable transportation choices, especially ones that reduce emissions and improve our air quality,” said Mayor Jackie Biskupski. “We hope this partnership with Lyft will show it is possible to get around Salt Lake City without owning a car.”
Starting today, Salt Lake City residents can register at ditchwithlyft.com/SLC for the opportunity to receive credit towards Lyft, GREENbike and Hive Pass.
“The way that people move around cities is changing faster than ever, and we are excited to challenge Salt Lake City residents to change their everyday habits and give up their car for a month,” said Jeremy Neigher, market manager for Lyft Utah. “Lyft alone is not the overall solution to overcome transportation hurdles, but by partnering with GREENbike and Hive Pass we are able to create a full menu of mobility options for Salt Lake City residents.”
On average, it costs about $9,000 each year to own and operate a car. The Hive Pass is $42 for one month of unlimited trips on the UTA bus, TRAX and streetcar services. An annual membership for GREENBike is $75. Salt Lake City residents can save thousands of dollars by riding with Hive, GREENBike and ridesharing services like Lyft.
“GREENbike has prevented 3.6 million pounds of CO2 from entering our air, removed 3.9 million vehicle miles from local roads, while burning 60 million calories in the process,” said GREENbike Founder & Executive Director, Ben Bolte. “We’re thrilled to be able to partner with Lyft and Salt Lake City on this fantastic program. Thanks to our title sponsor, SelectHealth, we’re able to donate passes to dozens of programs like these every year.”
“The Utah Transit Authority is proud to support Lyft’s Ditch Your Car program, said UTA Interim Executive Director, Steve Meyer. “UTA views Ditch Your Car as an innovative enterprise which will increase the transportation options available in our community. We’re excited to see the results of integrating emerging and disruptive transit alternatives such as Lyft and GREENbike with the foundational transportation options offered by UTA. We hope even more commuters will ditch their cars after the conclusion of this program.”

Salt Lake City and other cities are being built around people, not cars or parking lots. Using a mix of multimodal options, it’s possible to rework cities and ditch personal cars. Lyft is committed to being a part of the solution to reduce congestion, carbon footprint and the pain points of personal car ownership in Salt Lake City.
