SLCC hosts ‘Expect The Great’ college, career readiness event

Salt Lake Community College will host this year’s annual “Expect The Great,” a state college and career readiness event for African, African-American and black students, on Oct. 5 and 6.

The event, which this year boasts the theme “Build, Invest, Connect,” is free and takes place at SLCC’s Taylorsville Redwood Campus (4600 S. Redwood Road, Taylorsville) at the Student Center building. The first day of the event is by invitation only for Utah college students. For the event’s second day, the public is invited to participate in breakout sessions and panel discussions about everything from financial aid and scholarships to admissions and transitioning from college to career.

Registration is required for the Saturday event. For more information or to register, visit www.expectthegreatutah.com.

Expect The Great started in 2011 and is held at a different Utah college campus each year. It began with the leadership of Utah System of Higher Education Board of Regents Vice Chair and Calvary Baptist Pastor France A. Davis, who sought an outreach event aimed at increasing college access, participation, retention and graduation for the state’s African, African-American, and black students and communities. Expect The Great is also one effort to support the goal of Utah Governor Gary Herbert’s Education Excellence Commission for at least 66 percent of Utah’s adults between the ages of 20 and 64 to hold a postsecondary degree or certificate by the year 2020.
