The League of Women Voters of Utah encourages municipalities to participate in the Municipal Alternate Voting Methods Pilot Project approved by the Utah Legislature in 2018. The pilot project presents an opportunity for municipalities not only to save money by eliminating the need for a primary election, but also to elect officials with broad support from the electorate.
This weekend Utah League sent letters to the elected officials of Payson, Vineyard, and Salem urging them to remain part of the Ranked Choice Voting (RCV) Pilot Project. It is anticipated the city councils will vote on participation in the RCV Pilot Project this week.
The League studied ranked choice voting in 2017. (The study can be found atlwvutah.org.) Based on our findings we came to a consensus in support of RCV and believe it could be a better option than the current system. The League believes RCV could be a fair and representative elections system. We also believe RCV would give more voters a larger voice throughout election campaigns and in the selection of final winners in the voting process.
