Gov. Gary R. Herbert has announced the appointment of Chris Parker as the executive director of the Utah Department of Commerce.
“Chris Parker has shown the skills, judgment, and experience necessary to fulfill the Department of Commerce’s critical role in promoting a robust business environment and protecting consumers,” Gov. Herbert said.
Chris Parker was appointed as the interim executive director of the Utah Department of Commerce in January of 2020. Prior to his appointment, Parker served as the Director of the Utah Division of Public Utilities for nine years. In his time at the division, he led a staff of over 30 professionals regulating utilities in the public interest.
Parker came to the division from the Office of Legislative Research and General Counsel where he served as counsel to various legislative clients beginning in 2004, including committees on utilities, natural resources, government operations, and trade. Prior to his work with the Utah Legislature, Chris served as a law clerk to Justice Michael J. Wilkins at the Utah Supreme Court.
“I am humbled by Governor Herbert’s trust. The Department of Commerce exists to smooth commerce while protecting the public from careless and unscrupulous conduct,” Parker said. “Utah’s economy depends on our efforts. By remaining proactive and efficient, working with partners across the state, I know we can continue to improve upon the stellar success of Utah’s economy under the Governor’s leadership.”
The appointment is subject to confirmation by the Utah Senate.
