U.S. Senator Mitt Romney (R-UT) has named Liz Johnson to serve as his next Chief of Staff. A 12-year veteran of the U.S. Senate, Johnson has served for the past two years as the senator’s Communications Director. Matt Waldrip, a longtime Romney aide who ran his 2018 Senate campaign and served as Chief of Staff since January 2019, is departing the Senate office for a new position outside government.
“Liz has provided excellent counsel and communications advice as a member of my senior team these past two years, and I have great confidence in her judgment and leadership as we work to address the many challenges facing our nation,” Romney said. “I am also deeply grateful for Matt’s exceptional service and friendship, and for successfully guiding our team’s efforts for the past two years to advance priorities for Utah and our country.”
Johnson is a seasoned communications and policy strategist with more than 15 years of government and political experience. Her previous public service includes roles as communications director for Senator Kelly Ayotte (R-NH) and her 2016 reelection campaign, spokesperson for Senator Susan Collins (R-ME), and communications adviser for Supreme Court nominee Neil Gorsuch and for the Department of Homeland Security. During Johnson’s Senate career, she has served as president and executive board member of the U.S. Senate Press Secretaries Association. She is a Maine native.
