For fans of The Game of Thrones, you recognize that word repeated three times.
And how well that applies to many of the people who attended a Wednesday night public hearing on Draper accepting a new homeless center.
Shame.
Shame.
Shame.
On those who booed a homeless man who spoke at the hearing, as he tried to explain his problems and those of other homeless people.
Draper Mayor Troy Walker should be both proud and saddened today.
Proud of his own actions and those who support him. Saddened by the responses of many of his constituents.
Asked by those backing a statewide approach to helping the homeless – including House Speaker Greg Hughes, R-Draper – Walker stood up and offered two possible sites, both in relatively open areas away from housing and commerce.
It was the right thing for Walker to do.
It was the right thing for Hughes to do.
And to get harangued, even booed, at a public meeting is, well, shameful.
It’s time for the good citizens of Draper, Bluffdale, West Valley City, South Salt Lake, Murray and other Salt Lake County areas to take a hard look at themselves in the mirror.
It’s time for these folks – dare I say Christians? – to seriously ask themselves how they will personally be harmed if there is a homeless center two or three blocks – in the case of Draper, two or three miles – away from their homes and businesses.
Going to church on Sunday and making a financial commitment to their religion does not end one’s responsibility to being a good neighbor, even a friend, to people in need.
Walker told KSL Radio’s Doug Wright Thursday morning that it was a “dark moment” when people at the public hearing booed the homeless man – who is working while living in a shipping container, wired up for electricity (no doubt illegally).
Shame.
Shame.
Shame.
Salt Lake County Mayor Ben McAdams – who has taken more abuse over the last few months than most lifetime politicians ever have – will make a decision on the site of a county homeless shelter soon.
It’s time for some good-hearted residents to stand up beside McAdams.
For the others, I say:
