Americans say Democrats would handle a number of domestic issues better than Republicans

A new report shows Americans think Democrats would do a lot better than Republicans on a number of domestic issues.

A Pew Research report shows Democrats score better than Republicans on their perceived ability to deal with a number of issues. Here’s the breakdown and party advantage in their latest survey:

  • Government spending – Democrats +8
  • Immigration – Democrats +11
  • Foreign Policy – Democrats +13
  • Education – Democrats +16
  • Health Care – Democrats +19
  • Abortion – Democrats +20
  • Environment – Democrats +31

Republicans score high on five issues in the survey:

  • Terrorist threat – Republicans +12
  • Gun policy – Republicans +5
  • Economy – Republicans +3
  • Trade – Republicans +3
  • Taxes – Republicans +1

The Democratic Party holds sizable advantages over the Republican Party on a number of major issues. More say the Democratic Party could do a better job than the GOP when it comes to dealing with the environment (59% to 28%), abortion and contraception (53% to 33%), health care (54% to 35%) and education policy (52% to 36%). It is also favored over the GOP on foreign policy (49% to 36%), immigration (50% to 39%) and government spending (48% to 40%).

 

On just one issue does the Republican Party have a significant edge: About half (48%) of the public says the Republican Party can better deal with the terrorist threat at home; 36% say the Democratic Party could do a better job.
