Hughes won’t run for Chaffetz’s seat

House Speaker Greg Hughes said Friday he won’t run to fill Rep. Jason Chaffetz’s seat in Congress.

The Associated Press reports Hughes thought about running, but won’t because he enjoys his position as Speaker of the House.

Hughes said on Friday that it’s important for the vacancy to be filled as quickly as possible. He says he wants to take himself out of the equation so that this process can happen as fast as possible if it’s needed.

Chaffetz said last month that he would not seek another term in 2018 and he’s open to a 2020 run for Utah governor.

He also said that he may not even finish the two-year term that started four months ago.
