Former Rep. Jason Chaffetz, who retired from Congress early, is slamming Congress for not staying in session through August. Apparently, Chaffetz doesn’t understand irony.
Chaffetz, who retired from Congress in June, just seven months after winning re-election, slammed Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell on Fox News (video below). From Mediaite:
“It’s infuriating,” Chaffetz said. “[Senate Majority Leader] Mitch McConnell went out in July and touted that the Senate was gonna stay in session through the end of next week. And yet, they adjourned early. And when you have 12 legislative days on the calendar, going through September, and you have to go through the long list you just highlighted how do you go home?”
The problem, of course, with Jason Chaffetz’s criticism of the 115th Congress for shirking its duties and leaving early is that Jason Chaffetz was part of the 115th Congress — until he shirked his duties and left early.
The former House Oversight Committee Chairman resigned from Congress on June 30 to become a Fox News contributor. This just eight months after he was elected to a fifth term by his constituents in Utah.
Undaunted by the apparent logic gap, Chaffetz blasted McConnell for the early adjournment.
“Mitch McConnell, if you can’t if you can’t follow through on your promise, to stay and work through the end of this week, and you say ‘Well, we’re gonna cut out early.’ How do you do that?”
