Former GOP presidential candidate and likely U.S. Senate candidate Mitt Romney reportedly met with some top advisers on Tuesday in Holladay.
Fox Business reports Romney met with longtime political adviser Spencer Zwick and Boyd Matheson, the former chief of staff for Sen. Mike Lee, to discuss policy related to his upcoming bid for U.S. Senate.
Matheson confirmed the meeting took place to UtahPolicy.com, but would not say if the discussions were related to an upcoming political campaign. “Just policy,” said Matheson in a text message. He would not elaborate on what specific policies were discussed.
Romney is reportedly set to formally announce his entrance into the campaign later this month.
They came to an agreement that some of the campaign promises he should run on when he’s touring the state could include improving Utah’s public education system, infrastructure reform and combating the opioid epidemic, according to those familiar with the matter.
Romney’s meeting with his two allies comes as he organizes his campaign team and gets ready to announce his campaign for outgoing Utah Sen. Orrin Hatch’s seat. Hatch revealed in early January that he will be retiring at the end of his seventh term in office, completing a historic 42-year career in the Senate. His campaign announcement, according to those close to Romney, is expected to occur by the end of the month.
