Sen. Orrin Hatch moved into the #7 slot on the list of people who have served the longest in the U.S. Senate on Monday.
Bloomberg political reporter Greg Giroud noted the milestone on Twitter Monday. Hatch has served in the U.S. Senate for 41 years, 2 months and 2 days, passing Mississippi Senator John Stennis who served in the Senate from 1947 to 1989.
Hatch, who is retiring at the end of the year, will finish in the #6 position, passing Arizona Senator Carl Hayden on election day of this year.
When Hatch retires, he will be behind Vermont Senator Patrick Leahy (who is still serving), Massachusetts Senator Edward Kennedy, South Carolina Senator Strom Thurmond, Hawaii Senator Daniel Inouye and West Virginia Senator Robert Byrd.
