Utah Thrives: Farming in Utah’s urban counties

Utah consumers like local food right from local farms. But encroaching development threatens urban farms.

Utah Foundation’s newest podcast looks at the challenges farmers face on the Wasatch Front as their land and water grow in value and subdivisions close in around them. They also have the pressures of international markets and government policies to deal with. But some are adapting to the challenges and even finding new opportunities.

In this edition of Utah Thrives, we’ll hear about the agricultural protection status that farmers in Wasatch Front communities are able to take advantage of, along with tax breaks that allow their land to be valued for its farming potential instead of urban development. Utah Farm Bureau President Ron Gibson talks about his family’s dairy farm near Ogden and how international concerns as well as local pressures affect their ability to stay in business.
