Hatch says Kavanaugh accuser is ‘mistaken’

Sen. Orrin Hatch says he spoke with Supreme Court nominee Brett Kavanaugh on Monday about the allegation he sexually assaulted a woman more than 30 years ago. Hatch said the woman must be “mistaken” about the claims.

Christine Ford wrote a letter alleging Kavanaugh got drunk and tried to rape her when they were in high school. That letter was made public over the weekend.

Hatch has been one of the fiercest supporters of pushing forward with Kavanaugh’s nomination, despite the allegations. After the existence of the letter was made known last week, Hatch said in a statement he would not “allow Judge Kavanaugh’s confirmation to be stalled because of an 11th hour accusation.”

Hatch spoke with CNN’s Manu Raju on Monday afternoon about his conversation with Kavanaugh. From Mediaite:

“I talked to [Kavanaugh] on the phone today…[he said] he didn’t do that, and he wasn’t at the party,” Hatch said. “So, you know, clearly, somebody’s mixed up.”

Raju continued to present questions to Hatch, asking if he believes Kavanaugh’s accuser.

“I think she’s mistaken,” Hatch answered. “I think she’s…she’s mistaken something that I don’t know. I mean, I don’t know her.”
