On Monday, Sen. Orrin Hatch came out firing against Democrats in the Senate, accusing them of mounting a “smear campaign” against Supreme Court nominee Brett Kavanaugh, who is facing a second, and possibly third, sexual misconduct allegation.
Hatch blasted an article published Sunday in the New Yorker that said Senate Democrats are investigating a sexual misconduct allegation against Kavanaugh that happened when he was a student at Yale. A woman alleges Kavanaugh exposed himself in front of her, causing her to touch his genitals without her consent.
The Hill reports Hatch blasted Democrats for using the “thinly sourced article” to delay Kavanaugh’s nomination.
“No innuendo has been too low, no insinuation too dirty. Everything is an excuse for delay, no matter how unsubstantiated,” said Hatch, a former chairman and current member of the Senate Judiciary Committee.
Hatch said that while every accuser “deserves to be heard,” Democrats are “engaged in a coordinated effort” to stop Kavanaugh.
Kavanaugh has been accused of sexual assault by Dr. Christine Blasey Ford when they were both in high school. Dr. Ford will testify before the Senate Judiciary Committee about her allegations on Thursday.
On Sunday night, Michael Avenatti jumped into the fray tweeting he represented a woman who had evidence that Kavanaugh engaged in the targeting of women for sex using drugs and alcohol.
