Poll: Romney tops Trump in Utah

Utah Sen. Mitt Romney would beat President Donald Trump in a hypothetical presidential primary matchup in Utah according to a new poll.

The survey from OH Predictive Insights found Romney would get 55% of the GOP vote while Trump only gets 37%.

From the news release:

“Republican base voters around the country back President Trump survey after survey shows,” said Mike Noble, Chief of Research of Phoenix-based research company OH Predictive Insights“But Beehive State voters buck that trend, giving the state’s junior senator a wide margin of victory in a matchup.”

Romney’s support runs deep within the Republican primary voters, especially among those who consider themselves somewhat conservative. Romney wins those voters 56-34, the poll found. Trump does better than Romney in one category: self-identified very conservative voters favor Trump 52-41. Romney’s anchor remains the members of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints, garnering a nearly 2-1 advantage against Trump.

“Just seven years ago, Romney won a bitter primary battle to carry the mantle for the GOP but lost to President Obama. If he wants to take on President Trump in a primary, he can count on Utahns to have his back,” Noble said.

Trump finished in third place in the 2016 GOP primary in Utah behind Texas Sen. Ted Cruz and former Ohio Gov. John Kasich. In the 2016 election, Trump won Utah’s 6 electoral votes, but only got 45.5% of the vote.
