Salt Lake City is one of six cities named by the nonpartisan Commission on Presidential Debates as a possible host site for one of three presidential debates ahead of the 2020 general election.

Salt Lake City is the westernmost city to submit an application. The other cities in the running are Nashville, Tenn.; Hartford, Conn.; Omaha, Neb,; Ann Arbor, Mich.; and Notre Dame, Ind. There will be three presidential and one vice-presidential debate prior to the 2020 election.

If Utah is selected, the debate will be held at the University of Utah.

UtahPolicy.com first reported in February the Utah Debate Commission had applied to be a host city and a representative for the Commission on Presidential Debates traveled to Salt Lake City in late 2018 for a site visit.

Former co-chair of the Utah Debate Commission, Scott Howell, told UtahPolicy.com that the Commission on Presidential Debates wanted to host a debate on foreign policy in Utah in 2016, but scheduling conflicts forced the debate to be shifted to Las Vegas.
