Stewart says State Department workers who undermine President Trump are ‘betraying’ the American people

Rep. Chris Stewart suggested Monday night that State Department employees who undermine President Donald Trump are part of a “deep state” that is betraying the Constitution. He also said the American political press “have proven to be the least curious people in the universe.”

Appearing on Fox News’ Laura Ingraham show, Stewart made the curious argument that State Department employees work for the people of the United States, and the people selected Donald Trump as president.

“They are betraying the people,” said Stewart of their participation in the impeachment inquiry. “They are betraying the trust of the Constitution, which has sustained for more than two hundred years, by saying the people made a mistake.”

Stewart did not offer any specific examples of how those employees are undermining the president, only saying they feel they are “so smart” that they have to “correct” the election of Trump in 2016.

The impeachment inquiry began after an anonymous whistleblower alleged President Trump withheld military aide from Ukraine until that country’s president agreed to dig up dirt on former vice president Joe Biden and his son, Hunter. Most of what the whistleblower claimed has been substantiated in the weeks since that complaint was made public. Last week acting chief of staff Mick Mulvaney confirmed a quid pro quo with Ukraine during a press conference, then spent most of the weekend trying to walk back those remarks.

Stewart also alleged that Democrats in Congress are cherry-picking information to gin up charges that will lead to Trump’s impeachment.

“It’s like Stalin’s ‘show me the man and I’ll show you the crime,’” he said. “They started with open hearings and it was a disaster. Now, they will hold closed sessions, but release the transcript. If there was anything in these hearings that would convince the American people that this president should be impeached, I promise you they would be holding an open hearing.”

Rep. Stewart also poured a heaping helping of disdain on the press, claiming they demonstrate a bias against President Trump by refusing to investigate “legitimate questions” about Democrats.

“They have proven to be the lease curious people in the universe. They’re unwilling to ask some of these basic questions,” said Stewart.

He did not offer up any examples of what those questions might be.
