Rep. Chris Stewart slammed Democrats on Thursday for being “giddy” over the impeachment of President Donald Trump.
“I happened to walk by a television with the chief justice swearing-in by the Senate and with Nancy Pelosi handing out celebratory pens,” said Stewart on Fox Business Channel.
“She said she takes no joy in this. She is prayerful and somber about it. My gosh, if anyone in America doesn’t believe she and the other Democrats are giddy over this? They have been trying to impeach the president over three years. They finally have been able to do it. They’re hardly prayerful and somber. They’re celebratory,” he said.
Now that the House has transmitted the articles of impeachment to the Senate, the trial phase of impeachment is set to get underway next week.
Stewart, one of President Trump’s staunchest defenders in Congress, said he believes Democrats have overreached with impeachment.
“The American people expect something. They don’t think you remove the President of the United States without accusations of a crime or meaningful wrongdoing. I think the American people will tune in and they will walk away with the same idea reinforced, that there isn’t anything there,” said Stewart.
