Sen. Mitt Romney said it’s “very likely” he will be in favor of calling witnesses in the Senate impeachment trial of President Donald Trump, but he’ll hold off making a final decision until after opening arguments are finished.
“I think it’s very likely I’ll be in favor of witnesses, but I haven’t made a decision finally yet and I won’t until the testimony is completed,” said Romney after the first day of opening arguments from President Trump’s defense team according to CNN.
Earlier this month Romney said he would like to hear testimony from former national security adviser John Bolton during the impeachment trial about President Trump’s contacts with Ukraine.
Bolton has said he would testify if he is subpoenaed during the trial.
The Senate will vote on whether to call witnesses during the trial once opening arguments are concluded. If all 47 Democrats in the Senate vote for witnesses, they’ll still need 4 Republicans to join them.
