Just one day after she withdrew from her re-election bid for the Utah Senate, Deidre Henderson joined Lt. Gov. Spencer Cox as his running mate.
Cox made the announcement via email on Thursday.
“She is a tremendous leader, a consistent conservative and unafraid of doing what is right for the people she serves,” said Cox in the news release.
Henderson will assume day-to-day campaigning duties while Cox heads up the state’s response to the coronavirus pandemic.
“I look forward to representing our campaign and plan to work hard to earn the support of Utahns and sharing with them the conservative principles Spencer and I strongly believe in,” said Henderson.
Three other Republican candidates for governor have already named their running mates for the 2020 election. Former Utah GOP Chairman Thomas Wright was first out of the gate, tapping retiring Rep. Rob Bishop as his campaign partner. Former Gov. Jon Huntsman picked Provo Mayor Michelle Kaufusi for the No. 2 spot on his campaign and Jan Garbett is running with Joe Jarvis.
Former House Speaker Greg Hughes, Salt Lake County councilmember Aimee Winder-Newton and businessman Jeff Burningham have yet to name their picks for Lt. Governor.
