Former House Speaker Greg Hughes picked Victor Iverson, a Washington County Commissioner, to be his Lt. Governor nominee on Tuesday.
“He has kept Washington County strong and prepared, with the lowest tax rate in the state and a full year of rainy-day funds in reserve. Victor has served government at the city, county and federal level, is immediate past president of the Utah Association of Counties and is the person Utah can trust to be the next lieutenant governor,” said Hughes in a press release.
Iverson was elected to the Washington County Board of Commissioners in 2015, and currently serves as chair of that body.
Hughes is the last Republican running for governor to name a running mate.
A recent poll of likely Republican primary voters put Hughes in third place with 16 percent support. Spencer Cox leads with 40 percent, while Jon Huntsman has 33 percent.
Hughes is attempting to qualify for the June primary ballot through the upcoming GOP state convention. If Hughes can get 60 percent of the delegate vote, he will be the only candidate to advance to the primary election from the convention. If no candidate hits 60 percent, the top two vote-getters will move to the primary. So far, Cox, Huntsman and former GOP Chairman Thomas Wright have qualified for the June primary through signature gathering.
