Sen. Mitt Romney rebuked President Donald Trump’s firing of government watchdogs, calling it a “threat to accountable democracy.”
On Friday, Trump fired State Department Inspector General Steve Linick. It’s the latest in a series of firings of independent government watchdogs following President Trump’s acquittal on two articles of impeachment earlier this year.
In a Twitter post on Saturday evening, Romney denounced Trump’s purge of the independent government officials who are tasked with independent oversight of government officials.
“The firings of multiple Inspectors General is unprecedented; doing so without good cause chills the independence essential to their purpose. It is a threat to accountable democracy and a fissure in the constitutional balance of power,” wrote Romney.

Top Democrats in Congress have launched a probe into Linick’s firing, accusing the President of retaliating against public servants charged with oversight of his administration.
