Democrats are not going to be able to prevent a conservative takeover of the U.S. Supreme Court. That’s a monumental development.
Democratic senators have few options to prevent Trump nominee Amy Coney Barrett from joining the high court. They can’t attack Barrett personally, like they did Brett Kavanaugh. They can’t attack her credentials, scholarship or intelligence. They can’t attack her religious views or they look bigoted. Their only line of attack is speculating how she might vote on future cases involving Obamacare or abortion. Such speculation isn’t much basis to oppose a judicial nominee.
And refusing to even meet with her makes them look like petty schoolchildren snubbing someone who isn’t in their club.
Meanwhile, Utah Sen. Mike Lee met with Barrett on Tuesday. He later tweeted: “I was remarkably impressed by Judge Barrett. My meeting with her was fantastic. She is a judge, a legal scholar, and a lawyer with outstanding credentials. We had a great conversation and I am very much looking forward to speaking with her more during her confirmation hearing.”

TV ads target Romney. Conservatives must still be somewhat concerned that Romney won’t support the Barrett nomination. Two different groups are running ads in Utah asking Utahns to urge Romney to confirm Barrett.
Americans for Prosperity launched an ad campaign in eleven states, including Utah, to urge U.S. senators to confirm Barrett. A press release says, “AFP-Utah will be conducting extensive outreach across the state including, mailers, digital ads, direct mail and other tactics to scale its activists’ efforts. We’ve also set up a unique web page UniteForBarrett.com that empowers individuals to contact their senators, and phone and text grassroots outreach has already activated across the country.”
AFP-UT State Director Heather Andrews issued the following statement: “Our activists are eager to support the confirmation of Judge Amy Coney Barrett as a highly qualified and experienced jurist. Her record demonstrates her adherence to any judge’s foundational charge: to rule based on the Constitution rather than a personal agenda. Sen. Lee’s unshaken confidence in Judge Barrett speaks volumes since he, as a former Supreme Court clerk, recognizes the importance of having a Justice on the bench who puts the Constitution first. We also applaud Sen. Romney for expressing his openness to supporting a constitutionalist nominee and encourage him to do so.”
Meanwhile, Club for Growth also launched a SCOTUS ad in Utah and Alaska, “asking people to contact Senators Lisa Murkowski and Mitt Romney to encourage them to support the nomination of Judge Amy Barrett to the U.S. Supreme Court.” Click HERE to watch Utah ad.
Romney actually seems pretty solid in support of Barrett. Not sure why the ads are necessary.
