Policymaker profile: Getting to know Kera Birkeland

Utah Policy regularly profiles policymakers from across the state. In this edition we profile Utah Representative Birkeland, Republican, District 53.

Occupation: Law firm business manager.

Education: I attended BYU the summer of 2001 and 2002.

Growing up: I grew up in Montana and New York.

Childhood ambition: To make a difference in the world.

Family: One husband, six children and many “extra” kids.

Why politics: Because people matter, policy matters.

My perfect day: Sleeping in, eating whatever I want, and watching Hallmark movies with my family. 

Hobbies: Basketball, hiking, playing the piano, sleeping.

First job: Selling programs for the Great Falls Dodgers. 

Lesson taught me by my mother: Don’t listen to negativity.

Hottest issues I’m watching: Redistricting.

Biggest challenge in public life: Balancing it all.

Biggest accomplishment: Becoming a mom.

Alarm clock: 6:20 a.m.

Proudest moment: Anytime my kids do something kind for someone.

My philosophy of government: Less is more.

Why my political party: I LOVE the Republican Party platform.

I admire most in the world: My sister-in-law, Darlene Yates. As a single mom of seven, she’s is everything I hope to be in life.

A small insight into my psyche: It’s a jungle in there.

My farewell message to the world: I hope you felt important and loved.

My district is cool because: District 53 is the MOST beautiful. The people are amazing. We have four major state parks and Flaming Gorge. It’s the perfect blend of hard work and recreation.

I like serving in the Legislature because: I want to find real solutions.

Running for political office is: A great way to meet awesome people.

Historical figure I’d like to take to lunch: President Calvin Coolidge.

Sports team: Spurs.

Favorite pet: Our dog, Smalls.

I always laugh at: My own jokes.

Biggest issues ahead in 2021 session: Our budget.

My priorities for 2021 session: Proper police reform, repealing old and unneeded laws.
