Poll: Utahns Oppose Tax Hike to Pay for Schools

A majority of Utahns oppose a proposal to increase the personal income tax rate by 1% to provide more funding for schools.

Our UtahPolicy.com survey finds 54% of Utahns say they either "somewhat" or "strongly oppose" bumping the personal income tax rate from 5.1% to 6.1%. 43% of Utahns say they favor increasing the tax rate.

Rep. Jack Draxler (R-Logan) has proposed the hike which he says will generate about $600 million annually for Utah's schools.

Gov. Gary Herbert;s budget proposal increases funding for Utah's schools by $500 million, but takes a lot of that funding from transportation.

The survey was conducted for UtahPolicy.com by Dan Jones and Associates from December 2-12, 2014. It has a margin of error of +/- 3.97%.
