Utahns are split over President Obama's proposal to raise the minimum wage to $10.10 per hour.
A new Utah Policy survey finds 50% of Utahns oppose the plan while 47% are in favor.
Not surprisingly, 64% of Republicans say they oppose the minimum wage hike while 88% of Democrats are in favor. Independed voters virtually mirror our statewide results with 50% in favor of raising the minimum wage and 47% opposing.
Utah lawmakers this session have so far declined to pass legislation addressing the minimum wage. HB 236, sponsored by Rep. Justin Miller, D-Salt Lake, which would have raised the minimum wage for tipped employees to the current federal minimum failed in a House committe. HB 309, which raises Utah's minimum wage to $10.25 per hour has been assigned to a House committee, but has yet to be scheduled for a hearing.
The survey was conducted by Dan Jones and Associates from February 2-9, 2015 among 606 registered voters. It has a margin of error of +/- 3.98%.
