Most Utahns still oppose moving the state prison away from Draper.
A new UtahPolicy.com survey shows 52% say they would not favor moving the state prison away from Draper. That number is consistent with our December survey that had 55% saying they opposed the move.
Opposition to the prison has remained consistent across the two studies, as has support. In December, 36% favored moving the prison away from Draper. In the latest survey, 34% like the idea.
Among partisan voters, Democrats have moved the most in favor of moving the prison. Last December, 67% of Democrats were against the prison move. Now 52% say they oppose the move. During the same time frame, the number of Democrats who want to move the facility away from Draper has jumped 10-points, from 26% in December to 36% now.
Republicans and independent voters have remained about the same with their feelings toward relocating the prison. 48% of Republicans and 59% of independents oppose the move. In December, those numbers were 52% and 53%.
The legislature's Prison Relocation Commission is currently considering five possible sites and is expected to come up with a recommendation for a final spot early this summer.
The latest Dan Jones and Associates poll was conducted March 3-5, 2015 among 406 registered voters. Respondents were contacted via telephone and online. It has a margin of error of plus or minus 4.86 percent.
