The Race for the 2016 Nomination is Speeding Up (Video)

20160118 Jason PerryJason Perry, Director of the University of Utah’s Hinckley Institute of Politics, says we are finally reaching decision time in the 2016 election season.

“This is going to be a very revealing time,” says Perry. “Does Donald Trump’s popularity in the polls translate into votes? If it does, that means a lot going forward.”

Perry says that has lent a lot of uncertainty to the race so far. Because of that, he says, it’s still anybody’s ballgame heading into the Iowa Caucuses.

“You’re seeing Cruz rise very fast. You’re seeing Donald Trump inexplicably maintaining his popularity. The rest of the candidates are getting desperate because their opportunity may be slipping away.”

Perry also talks with Managing Editor Bryan Schott about the upcoming Utah Legislature and Utah’s rosy budget picture.

[Editor’s note: At the time of recording, Perry was still the interim director of the Hinckley Institute of Politics. A few hours after he was named permanently to the position.]
