Last night, Congressman Chris Stewart (R-UT) joined Fox News’ Special Report with Bret Baier to discuss the ongoing crisis in Afghanistan, including what it currently looks like on the ground and what we need to do moving forward.
Highlights of remarks are below, or watch online here.
The Ongoing Crisis:
“Where do you begin to describe this [crisis]? The President defends the policy, and I agree with him on the policy…but the implementation of this policy has been a disaster.
“It will literally take a generation for the U.S. to rebuild trust among our allies, particularly in the region, and, honestly, among the American people as well.”
On the Ground:
“The Taliban are dictating – to the United States president – that [President Biden] will adhere to the August 31 [withdrawal] deadline. And, if he doesn’t, they are making threats against Americans – they say that we will pay a price.
“That clearly indicates the potential for this to get ever worse. And once again…it didn’t have to be this way.”
“We owe [our allies] protection and safety right now. And, again, there’s no way in the world we’re going to get all of them out by August 31st. And with the Taliban saying, ‘that is a red line for us, we will not allow you to continue the operation beyond that,’…that is, of course, the great concern that we have right now.
