Meta launches Neighborhoods

The heart of every community are neighborhoods which has proven true especially over the past 18 months. To give people a new way to connect with people and places in these important communities, Facebook is expanding its test of Neighborhoods, a dedicated space within the Facebook app designed to help you connect with your neighbors, participate in your local community and discover new places nearby. Having just launched in November, residents can join their Neighborhood on Facebook.

The availability of Neighborhoods is timely as the holidays approach. One key feature in Neighborhoods is a Giving Marketplace which enables people to offer items they’re no longer using to their neighbors. It is the Season of Giving and Neighborhoods will empower people to help people in their own community.

Facebook Neighborhoods make it easier to support local businesses, ask for recommendations and tips, offer support, and meet community members with common interests. Supporting local businesses goes to the heart of what makes each neighborhood special and unique.

Utah has 6 of the 160 U.S. cities where the tool is being expanded to after previously being test piloted in 20+ U.S. cities earlier this year. These Utah cities include – Salt Lake City, West Valley City, Ogden, Orem, West Jordan, and Logan.

Neighborhoods is an opt-in experience within the Facebook app so you choose whether to join Neighborhoods and create a profile. Once you join Neighborhoods, you can decide whether to join just your neighborhood or also your Nearby Neighborhoods.

Following the pandemic, the hope is this new feature will enable users to engage with those around them and foster a greater sense of connection with their community.
