Rep. Stewart’s statement on Speaker Pelosi’s partisan China bill

Rep. Chris Stewart (R-UT) released the following statement regarding the introduction of Speaker Nancy Pelosi’s (D-CA) partisan, 2,912-page bill to counter China.

“My Republican colleagues and myself are convinced there is a smart, bipartisan path forward to counter the generational threat posed by the Chinese Communist Party. Speaker Pelosi’s bill is not on that path.

“This massive legislation was written behind closed doors with no Republican input. Even worse, it put an end to ongoing bipartisan, bicameral negotiations to develop a bill that would have the ability to pass both chambers of Congress. The bill’s inclusion of the EAGLE Act – which dedicates more taxpayer money to an unaccountable UN climate fund than it does to countering the CCP – proves Democrats aren’t serious about confronting our greatest adversary.

“Now, perhaps more than ever, politics must stop at the water’s edge. America’s enemies and allies are watching as we spar over matters of national security. They both need to know that we are united. I urge my colleagues across the aisle to do away with Speaker Pelosi’s partisan bill and work with Republicans on comprehensive legislation that will truly counter China’s aggression.”

Members of Congress have been told they must submit any amendments on the almost 3,000-page legislation by this Friday, January 28, 2022 – giving them only three days to read, comprehend, and research the legislation and then draft any amendments they would like to offer.
