Utah State Board of Education to convene special meeting for model library policy

The Utah State Board of Education (USBE) will be holding a special board meeting on June 30 to discuss a model library policy. The model library policy, which is being developed in accordance with H.B. 374, Sensitive Materials in Schools and board rule R277-628 School Libraries School Libraries, will provide school districts and charters schools with a guideline as they establish policies and procedures for the review of library materials.

The special board meeting will focus on the model library policy and allow time for the board to consider and discuss input from board members, the Office of the Attorney General, and constituents.

“The Board takes its duty to provide schools with a comprehensive policy for reviewing possibly sensitive materials in schools seriously,” said Board Chair Mark Huntsman. “We believe holding a special meeting is the best way to comply with the obligations in H.B. 374 and gather feedback from all stakeholders.”

The meeting, along with all board and committee meetings, can be viewed live on the USBE Youtube. Meeting agendas and minutes can also be found on the USBE website
