Eighty-seven percent of the graduates are from Utah
Utah Valley University’s (UVU) 2023 commencement and convocation ceremonies, honoring 8,517 students receiving a total of 9,629 degrees and certificates, will take place on Thursday, May 4, at 6:30 p.m. in the UCCU Center on UVU’s Orem Campus.
“Commencement and graduation are a time of joy and triumph for our students,” said UVU President Astrid S. Tuminez. “These events acknowledge achievement, but more importantly, they celebrate our students’ individual journeys that led them to their degrees. It is in the journeys where growth takes place — they learn persistence, grit, increased ability to think and make decisions, and what it feels like to succeed — all attributes that come from being a UVU Wolverine.”
Brandon Sanderson, a New York Times bestselling author of fantasy and science fiction books with Utah ties, will deliver the commencement speech. The event will be livestreamed via UVU’s YouTube page.
Sanderson will also receive an honorary degree in human letters during the ceremonies. Other honorary degree recipients include Elaine S. Dalton who will receive a degree in public service, and Scott C. Keller and Duff Thompson will receive degrees in business.
About the UVU Class of 2023
The UVU’s Class of 2023 represents a broad group of students:
- 87.7 percent or 7,471of the graduates are from Utah
- 49.6 percent of the graduates identify as female
- 33.6 percent of the graduates are first in their family complete a four-year college or university degree
- 1,596 or 18.7 percent are graduates of color
- The oldest graduate is 69 years old, the youngest is 16
The graduates will receive a total of 9,629 degrees that includes:
- 4,226 bachelor degrees
- 2,725 associate degrees
- 422 master degrees
- 2,224 certificates or diplomas
- 32 graduate certificates
The most popular majors are university studies, general education, business management, humanities and social sciences, psychology, accounting, nursing, art and design, biology, and criminal justice.
To see the graduation processional march at commencement, guests should be in their seats by 6 p.m. Convocations for the institution’s eight colleges and schools will be held earlier in the day on May 4.
