Romney, colleagues reintroduce bipartisan legislation to support 2028 Olympic and Paralympic Games

U.S. Senators Mitt Romney (R-UT), Alex Padilla (D-CA), and Dianne Feinstein (D-CA) reintroduced the LA28 Olympic and Paralympic Games Commemorative Coin Act, legislation to support and commemorate the 2028 Games set to take place in Los Angeles, California exactly five years from today. The House version of this bill is led by Representative Brad Sherman (D-CA).

This bipartisan legislation would direct the Treasury Department to mint and issue four types of coins in commemoration of the 2028 Olympic and Paralympic Games. The coins would be minted at no cost to the federal government, and any proceeds collected from the sale of these commemorative coins would aid in the execution of the 2028 Games and support its legacy programs, including the promotion of youth sports in the United States.

“The Olympics showcase the greatness of the human spirit, and it was one of the greatest honors of my life to organize the 2002 Salt Lake Games,” said Senator Romney. “I’m pleased to join Senator Padilla in reintroducing this legislation, which will direct the Treasury to mint coins in commemoration of the upcoming Los Angeles 2028 Olympic and Paralympic Games—without costing the federal government a dollar.”

“While the eyes of the world will be on the Olympic and Paralympic Games in Los Angeles exactly five years from today, the preparation for this grand event is already underway,” said Senator Padilla. “That’s why I’m proud to reintroduce legislation to help ensure the 2028 Games has the resources to be a world-class event.”

“Every four years, the Olympic and Paralympic games entertain and inspire us. As Los Angeles prepares to welcome the world in 2028, the sale of commemorative coins will support those preparations and promote youth sports to encourage the next generation of Olympic athletes,” said Senator Feinstein.

“The heart and dedication demonstrated by the athletes who participate in the Olympic and Paralympic games every four years is truly unparalleled. That is why I am proud to join my colleague from the Valley, Senator Padilla, in honoring these athletes by introducing the LA28 Olympic and Paralympic Games Commemorative Coin Act. As a senior member of the House Financial Services Committee, which has jurisdiction over this legislation, I’m honored that Los Angeles will be entrusted with the responsibility of hosting the Olympic and Paralympic Games, and I look forward to Congress moving quickly to advance this important bill to commemorate such an exciting and meaningful event,” said Representative Sherman.

“We couldn’t be more excited to celebrate the Olympic and Paralympic Games coming to the United States in the summer of 2028. 15,000 of the world’s best athletes will come to America to compete on the biggest stage in sports and we look forward to celebrating this once in a generation moment across the country. We appreciate the leadership of Senators Padilla and Romney in supporting a commemorative coin program for the LA28 Olympic and Paralympic Games,” said Michelle Schwartz, LA28 Olympic and Paralympic Games Chief External Affairs Officer.
