The Other Side Village announces names of first permanent homes

It takes a village to build a village, and now The Other Side Village has named the first permanent cottages sponsored by community members that residents will soon call home. Today business leaders David Ibarra and Tyson Murdock unveiled “Live Ready Casa” and “Silverado Manor” as they toured the two homes they sponsored as part of the first phase of the project.“

The names are meaningful to us in our lives and we hope they will be meaningful for the villagers who will call them home in the coming months,” said Tyson Murdock, Managing Partner of Murdock Automotive Group.

The Other Side Village is a master-planned, self-reliant neighborhood of 430 small homes that provides affordable, permanent quality housing for people coming out of chronic homelessness. Infrastructure work is beginning at the 38-acre lot at 1850 W. Indiana Avenue to accommodate an initial 60 cottages and additional AirBnB-style nightly rental cottages on eight acres. Cottages range from 250 to 400-square feet and each cost around $90,000 to build and fully furnish.

Like its sister program The Other Side Academy, the primary ingredient for success at The Other Side Village is creating a supportive environment, socially and physically. Residents will be required to pay rent and will have access to on-site social services and employment opportunities.“

David Ibarra and the Murdock family have been instrumental in the growth and development of The Other Side Academy for a long time. We’re grateful for their belief that this self-reliant and life-changing model deserves to exist,” said Joseph Grenny, co-founder of the Other Side Village. “This gift will continue their generous efforts by funding the establishment of The Other Side Village – a first-of-its kind application of our model to permanently changing the lives of the chronically homeless.”

Once completed, the village will include amenities for residents including a grocery store and community events center, as well as retail and other social enterprise facilities. A donut shop run by those in The Other Side program, that will eventually be housed in the village, provided refreshments for today’s event.

The Other Side Village is looking to complete its first phase by the end of the year with the sponsorship of the remaining 30 cottages. Ibarra and Murdock called on fellow businesses and community groups to join them in becoming a Village Partner through a donation of money, time, or services.“

Leadership is about taking action and we feel this is an area we can take action and contribute to something we know will work for the unsheltered population in our state,” said David Ibarra, Salt Lake entrepreneur and author.

Stack Homes built the cottages, which will be showcased in the upcoming Salt Lake Home Show.
