Schools across Utah celebrate state’s first ever American Founders and Constitution Month

During the month of September, schools across the state recognized and celebrated Utah’s first ever American Founders and Constitution Month with Constitution-themed programs, guest speakers, classroom discussions, creative projects, field trips, assemblies, and other activities honoring the Constitution and the founding of the United States of America. Examples from school districts around the state include:

  • Davis School District created a promotional video highlighting students learning about the constitution and teachers discussing the enduring importance of the Founding Fathers and the Constitution in our day.
  • In the Salt Lake City School District, teachers utilized the Constitution Fitness Program, a program created to help students become more proficient in understanding the Constitution, and several schools streamed a live reading of the Constitution for students.
  • In the San Juan School District, Lynda Boyle, a history teacher at Monticello High School, brought a group of her students to Utah Valley University’s, “Constitution Day Conference,” where students learned about the importance of state constitutions.
  • In the Granite School District, events included readings, classroom visits from judges and other elected officials, assemblies featuring speakers and performers from the Daughters of the American Revolution in colonial era costumes, and visits to the Utah State Capitol Building.

“We are thrilled with the overwhelming response to Utah’s inaugural American Founders and Constitution Month. This initiative has provided a valuable opportunity for students to further connect with America’s history and heritage. We look forward to seeing this annual tradition continue to enrich the educational experience in our schools,” said State Superintendent of Public Instruction Sydnee Dickson.

USBE would like to extend its gratitude to all the teachers, students, families, and community members who participated in American Founders and Constitution Month. By fostering an environment that promotes civic education and an appreciation for our nation’s history, Utah is empowering future generations to become informed and engaged citizens.

Additional Context: During its August 3rd meeting, the Utah State Board of Education approved a resolution in support of House Bill 179 (63G-1-401), which recognizes September as American Founders and Constitution Month, and establishes September 17th as Constitution Day. The resolution is meant to draw attention to the importance of the United States Constitution.
