Weber State to welcome Marvel author, podcaster Gabby Rivera

Weber State University will host acclaimed author Gabby Rivera on Nov. 7 at 7:30 p.m. in the Val. A. Browning Center Allred Theater. Rivera will speak about prioritizing joy, as well as her experience as an LGBTQ+ woman of color.

Rivera is the first Latina to write for Marvel Comics, known for her popular series “America,” which features the superhero America Chavez. She also hosts the podcast “Joy Revolution” and authored the young adult novel “Juliet Takes a Breath,” a coming-of-age story about a queer Puerto Rican.

Deborah Uman, dean of the Telitha E. College of Arts & Humanities, said she’s excited to have Rivera come to campus. “She’s a really engaging speaker with brilliant ideas about questions of identity and belonging, and she has her finger right on the pulse of where young people are right now.”

The event is part of the Browning Presents! series sponsored by the college.

Uman said Rivera will focus on strength, joy and power. “This is a really important message, especially right now. Finding joy in our world is what gets us through difficult times.”

Tickets are $5 for students and can be purchased at WSU’s online ticket office. The event is also open to the public.
