Governor Cox leads Utah delegation to strengthen trade relations with Mexico

A delegation of 34 Utahns, led by Gov. Spencer J. Cox, is returning to Mexico City and Monterrey, Mexico. This trade mission will deepen ties established during the governor’s previous visit to Mexico in April 2022, which resulted in $52.55 million in new international sales and sourcing opportunities.

The implementation of the United States-Mexico-Canada Agreement (USMCA) in 2020 has driven renewed interest and greater incentive to engage in trade with Mexico. As Utah’s third-largest trading partner, Mexico plays a pivotal role in the state’s economic growth and development. To build momentum for the upcoming visit, Mexico’s ambassador to the U.S., Esteban Moctezuma Barragán, came to Utah and met with Utah businesses to discuss opportunities between the two markets.

Mexico is connected to 60% of the world’s GDP, offering unparalleled overland access to the United States and Central America, as well as strategic ports in both the Pacific and Atlantic oceans. From a national and economic security perspective, Mexico has become an attractive destination for nearshoring the manufacturing of essential goods, notably as a viable alternative to China.

Organized by the Governor’s Office of Economic Opportunity and World Trade Center Utah, international trade missions and shows reinforce Utah’s commitment to fostering global partnerships and driving economic prosperity.
